An internal device can be installed as a card inserted in a slot on the mother board, a cable connected to an IDE plug, or slaved to an existing device. |

Device Installation

A device is a piece of computer equipment that is either installed internally or connected externally to the computer. A new device needs to be configured (recognized by the operating system) before it is functional. |
Samples of internally installed devices are additional hard drives, CD ROM drives, floppy disk or tape drives, scanner ports, ZIP drives, modems, DVD drives, etc.. Other internally installed components include sound or graphic cards, CPU chips, RAM, etc.
External devices include printers, scanners, cameras, joysticks, keyboards, mice & trackballs, and USB devices.
With USB ports, new devices are so easy to setup and use. However, some devices and PC’s are not compatible or the operating system has trouble recognizing the device. In these incidences, additional drivers (information files that tell the operating system how to interact with the device), may be needed. |
